    Baby Gender Prediction

This is based on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, a chart drawn up over 700 years ago and discovered in a royal tomb in Beijing, China. The original is now displayed in the Beijing Institute of Science.

Please remember that this is for entertainment purposes only.

In order to predict the gender of your baby simply choose the mothers Chinese age at conception and the lunar month of conception from the drop down menus above and press the predict button.

General principle is to add 1 to your 'normal' age if your birthdate is past the Chinese New Year.

For example : If Susan was born January 10th, her Chinese Lunar Age would be 25.
But, if Carol was born on July 9th of the same year, her Chinese Lunar Age would be 26.

Chinese Lunar Age : The Chinese count the age starting from the birth, every Chinese lunar year which you will traverse, counts for one year more whatever your month of birth.

If you were born from January 1st - February 20th (inclusive of these dates), you should use your real (Gregorian/English Calendar) age.

However, if you were born from February 21st - December 31st (again, inclusive of these dates), you should add one year to your Gregorian age.

I hope I didn't make this too confusing!
Rumors have it that this chart is over 90% accurate when used properly. However, according to a survey in 1999, they find the accuracy rate of this prediction is less than 75 percent.

Ready to give it a try?
If you are a mother, check the month you conceived and your lunar age at the date of conception.

Please remember that this chart is for entertainment purposes only.

Heart Rate

One of the popular theories on baby gender prediction is based on the baby's heart rate.

The theory states that if your baby's heart rate was 140 beats per minute and above, you would be having a girl. If the heart rate was under 140 beats per minute, then you would be having a boy.

While this would be a quick and easy baby gender prediction method, there is actually no evidence that this theory is accurate. There is a recent study, "Sex, Heart Rate, and Age" from Terry J. DuBose, M.S., RDMS; Director Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, which indicates there is no correlation between foetal heart rate and the gender of the baby.

The human embryonic heart rate (EHR) accelerates at 3.3 beats per minute per day during the first month of beating. Beginning at a rate near the mother's, at approximately 80-85 B/M at the start of the 5th week, the heart rate accelerates to a mean of 175 B/M (+/-20) at 9 LMP weeks. This increase is approximately 10 beats every 3 days until the early 9th week. It then abruptly begins to decelerate.

The fetal heart rate is NOT predictive of the gender.

Needle or Wedding Ring

This an easy baby gender prediction method to try. Take a pin, needle, or wedding ring and attach it to a thread or strand of hair. Hold the dangling item over mom to be's belly while she is lying down. If the needle or wedding ring swings in a strong circular motion, you will be having a girl. If it moves in a to and fro motion like a pendulum, you will be having a boy.

An alternate version of this baby gender prediction method is to dangle the needle or wedding ring over the expectant mom's wrist instead of belly.

Carry high it's a girl, low it's a boy

The popular belief that women carrying boys carry low and that women carrying girls carry high just isn't true. The shape and height of your belly is determined by your muscle tone, uterine tone and the position the baby is in. That's why you may think you're having a boy because you're carrying low, when actually the baby just dropped lower into the pelvis because you're closer to delivery

Please note:

The only way to get an accurate baby gender prediction is via a medical test. An amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling test will be able to accurately predict the gender of your baby. Doctors will not perform these invasive tests just for the purpose of baby gender prediction.

Ultrasounds can provide an semi-accurate baby gender prediction as well, but wrong gender predictions are made regularly.

Did you know?

One of the earliest written records of a urine based pregnancy test can be found in an ancient Egyptian document. A papyrus described a test in which a woman who might be pregnant could urinate on wheat and barley seeds over the course of several days: If the barley grows, it means a male child. If the wheat grows, it means a female child. If both do not grow, she will not bear at all.

Testing of this theory in 1963 found that 70 percent of the time, the urine of pregnant women did promote growth, while the urine of non pregnant women and men did not.

Scholars have identified this as perhaps the first test to detect a unique substance in the urine of pregnant women, and have speculated that elevated levels of estrogens in pregnant women's urine may have been the key to its success.
