A baby has been born in Cancun, Mexico, weighing 14 pounds, 8 ounces (6.6kg), double the weight of an average new born. He was born by Caesarean section on Monday morning. Antonio Vasconcelos, nicknamed by nurses 'Super Tonio', was born at Jesus Kumate Rodriguez hospital in Cancun Mexico on Monday Jan. 29, 2007. At a whopping birth weight of 6.6 kilograms (14.5 pounds), the 'little' fellow is causing a sensation in the Mexican resort city. According to doctors the baby drinks 5 ounces (150ml) of milk every three hours and is wearing diapers meant for a six month old baby.![]() Nurses in the hospital joked as they placed 'Super Tonio' next to another newborn baby. The hospitals director said the baby is healthy despite high blood sugar and a slight blood infection, both of which are being controlled so that the child can get on with his normal life in a few more days. Antonio's mother, Teresa Alejandra Cruz, 23, and father, Luis Vasconcelos, 38, said they were proud of the boy, and noted that Ms Cruz had given birth to a baby girl seven years ago who weighed 5.2 kilograms (11.46 pounds). ![]() Other Big Babies![]() August 10, 2006. Britain's tiniest baby is one year old Saturday Feb. 3, 2007. Born 14 weeks premature at just 12.5oz (354g), doctors feared that Ruby Angel Dunn would not survive. Ruby, whose weight dropped to just 10.5oz soon after birth, now weighs nearly 11 pounds (4.9kg). Born at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, she had 15 blood transfusions, battled an infection and repeatedly stopped breathing. Mother Kerry, 41 and Father Craig, 38 said: "Ruby's first birthday is a day we thought we would never have. We are delighted. She is now such a healthy, happy baby."![]() | ||
Florida - February 20th, 2007 Amillia Sonja Taylor was just 9.5 inches (24.13 centimeters) long and weighed less than 10 ounces (284 grams) when she was born Oct. 24. She was delivered after just under 22 weeks of pregnancy.When she was born, she was the length of a ballpoint pen. The little girl spent four months in the neonatal intensive care unit. Her tiny lungs were strained, she needed supplemental oxygen. There were heart problems and blood pressure issues. For six weeks her mom, whose scheduled due date was not until March, was not allowed to hold her. ![]() Amillia was released from hospital in February 2007. She was conceived in vitro and has been in an incubator since birth. She has received oxygen and will continue to get a small amount even after she goes home. She is the first child for Eddie and Sonja Taylor of Homestead. She was delivered by Caesarean section and now weighs about 4.5 pounds (2 kg) and is just over 15.5 inches (39.5 cm) long.
